Hey all –
Just a quick update as we wrap up the week. We’ve officially began our unit on ecology! Students submitted their flashcards on Wednesday for the following vocabulary words.
Due to the high amount of student work NOT submitted in the 1st and 2nd quarters, we decided to implement a new framework to boost student work completion and turn-in. With this implementation over the last 4 days, we’ve seen a drastic decrease (read: 35 students down to 6 students) in the number of missing assignments. Students understand that they will continue to work within this framework until their missing work is submitted.

Have a great weekend!
Today was the “end” of our 2nd quarter (it “officially” closes next Tuesday) – all grades are currently being finalized and posted so be sure to check PowerSchool to see how you finished out the second quarter and first semester!
For students wanting to get a head start on next week’s unit/homework , you can find the homework on the 3rd Quarter Weekly HW page (or click here).

Hey everyone! Happy Thursday to each of you!
Yesterday students took CFA #4 which focused on
- 8.L.1: Pathogens + the treatment & prevention of spreading diseases.
- 8.L.2: Biotechnology and its impact on North Carolina
- 8.L.5: Cellular processes and healthy choices for healthy living
I’m pleased, SO PLEASED, to recognize these students:
While I am super proud of these students, I have to give a shout out to the huge number of my students who received 80% as well. So SO close!
Today in class students had the opportunity to reflect on their CFA #4 performance by completing their correctives.
These correctives are DUE TOMORROW so students are able to take their retake before the second quarter ends.
Tomorrow will be spent doing retakes and preparing for our upcoming unit next week on ecology (I LOVE this unit!).
Don’t forget! Next Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day so we will not have school. See you back here on Tuesday!
Hey everyone –
Just a quick update for today! Students continued working on their mini booklets to prepare for CFA #4. As I mentioned yesterday, I would like for students to have MONDAY, TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY’S HOMEWORK all finished and ready to TURN IN ON WEDNESDAY before they take their CFA. I am confident that completing all the homework questions coupled with studying all 4 booklets will easily help them to reach 84% or higher on CFA #4.
See below for info on what we did in class today.
Study study study!
So typically Monday is filled with vocabulary activities, however we have switched gears and are in review and prep mode for CFA #4. We are working on completing 4 different mini booklets – each focusing on a different standard (8.L.1.1, 8.L.1.2, 8.L.2.1 and 8.L.5 – all-inclusive). The general format of each sheet is as follows: Part 1 – Vocabulary; Part 2; EOG-Style Multiple Choice questions; Part 3: Open ended response questions.
Students worked at their own pace on theses booklets. Once they were finished with one, they brought it up to me and began working on the second booklet while I corrected/reviewed their first booklet (it was a very smooth process).
A note on this week’s homework: While I am aware that it is in our typical format, I would like for students to have MONDAY, TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY’S HOMEWORK all finished and ready to TURN IN ON WEDNESDAY before they take their CFA. I am confident that completing all the homework questions coupled with studying all 4 booklets will easily help them to reach 84% or higher on CFA #4.
Happy learning and study, study, STUDY!
Happy Friday afternoon to you all!
Well, yesterday due to a fallen tree causing a major power outage in our school’s neighborhood we did not have school. Today students played a sailing synthesis game with our current unit on cellular processes (8.L.5.1)!
We used a set of questions provided by a secondary science facilitator, Cindy Rudolph, from our district. These questions came from a super useful website called Problem-attic. In case you haven’t already heard of it, there’s a HUGE (read: MASSIVE) bank of high quality questions from all sorts of state assessments, academic competitions and even NY Regents exams.
If you want to get a copy of the document as a PDF question set click here.
If you want to edit the question set to tailor it to your students’ needs click here!
Have a great weekend!
Happy middle of the week to you all! I hope you enjoyed your winter break and are ready to get back into the swing of things.
Monday we started off with our unit “Molecular Biology” (read: photosynthesis and cellular respiration to promote healthy cell function and body maintenance). Here are our vocabulary words for this week:
Students had the opportunity to work on their flashcards and practice some vocabulary skills for the week. We played SpeedMatch to familiarize ourselves with these vocabulary words! Click here to play SpeedMatch.
Text Tuesday we focused on our “Get the Grub” reading. Students read their text in pairs and answered these questions independently on page 53 of our notebooks. They checked their answers with those in my notebook and proceeded to begin working on their scavenger hunt. You can find our Text Tuesday reading/assignment here.
Today we finished up our Text Tuesday assignment, worked on our scavenger hunt activity and played Kahoot!
Tomorrow we will be playing our sailing game – a comprehensive activity for 8.L.5.1!
