Benchmarks and Flashcards and Projects, Oh My!

Hi everyone,
I hope you had a great Friday!
Today we took our first benchmark of the school year. It was a useful tool to figure out where our students are and what we need to do to enhance their learning!
We were also introduced to a new approach to Flashcard Friday. Students were given these words:
1. variable
2. data
3. experiment
4. conclusion
Instead of our classic “here’s the word and definition and make your flashcard” approach, we are now working to make our students more accountable.
Students must
1. Write the word and some type of colorful illustration to represent that vocabulary word on the front of the card.
2. Write a definition they’ve found and WHERE (source, page #, book etc) they located that definition on the back on the card.
3. Write his/her initials on the top corner because we will start playing a vocabulary game called “Boom Bag” and when the game is over, we want to make sure everyone’s vocabulary cards are returned to their rightful owner. 🙂

Here’s an example of our new and improved vocabulary flashcards!

I also have to tell you all how excited I am about the projects that were turned in today. Oh. My. Gosh! They are SO awesome. I saw poems, comic strips, models, dioramas, speeches and more! I am so amazed with the creativity, the artistic ability, the imagination and effort of these projects!
Here are a few, and I mean a tiny glimpse, of the awesomeness of these projects.
